tom scheerer in the bahamas

Emily Oster

This time last year, we were planning our May trip to the Bahamas. It was an amazing vacation and one we frequently talk of doing again. In fact, if it were feasible I would book that trip right now! So when I saw the recent Architectural Digest feature on Tom Scheerer's new personal Bahamas home, I was already predisposed to love the project. Composed of six small pavilions connected by courtyards and outdoor living spaces, the home is simplicity at its best. Stucco covered concrete, hipped roofs and thick walls make the structures into their own sort of monolithic village.

The exterior is perfectly complimented by the interior which includes lots of white, rattan and natural textiles.

This Great Abaco Island home is just the most recent of Scheerer's Bahamas design collection. Past projects include this stunning hilltop home....

This veranda home...

As well as several others - some available for viewing on Scheerer's website and other not yet published.

pillowfort - target's new collection for kids

Emily Oster

Target recently launched their new home collection for kids called Pillowfort. Its a huge collection of 600+ items and has some truly amazing items for little ones. I also was pleasantly surprised to see some pieces that would work great in adult spaces. Below are more than a few of my favorite items in the collection. Nice job Target!

Bedding

One of my standout items from Pillowfort are their sheet sets. When thinking about the design of kids room, I tend towards investing in a quilt or duvet cover and then mixing it with more a economical sheet set. It can be hard to find cute, fun and on budget sheets which is why Pillowfort's selection is especially great.

On the more whimsical design side, I like....

They also have some great basics that could also easily be used in a grown up bedroom...

Furniture

The furniture selection is more limited but I do really like the Boone collection as well as this fun nightstand below that is available in a couple of different colors.

Lighting

Another home run category of items from Pillowfort is their lighting. Almost all of their lamps are available in several different colors and are all priced super reasonably. Also most of their designs would work in any room in the house.

The decor section of Pillowfort is almost too extensive to pick favorites but below are a few personal favorites. I especially love the house shelf!

hellebore update

Emily Oster

Hellebores were the subject of my first flower feature last June. I planted one under an oak tree with a bunch of transplanted lily of valley sometime late last spring and have been patiently waiting for it to grow and bloom. Well I waited and waited....

It didn't show signs of growth nor did it seem to be dying until late in the fall did it begin to sprout some new foliage! Not very much but enough to give hope and then over the weekend three beautiful blossoms!

The plant is very small and I have been doing some reading about how to better foster its growth. From what I have gathered, I need to water it more during the summer months, prune back the dead blossoms and foliage in the late spring and most immediately add some compost or fertilizer as spring starts to make its debut. Now just fingers crossed that my lily of the valley transplant last year was successful....
