room and board

Emily Oster

Room and Board is one of those companies that I really wish would open a St. Louis store. I love the midcentury style of a lot of their pieces and the fact that 90% of their products are American made. I also really like their selection of kids furniture and brightly colored accent pieces.

Several weeks ago, I was shopping at the Restoration Hardware outlet and came across a beautiful and very large peacock mirror. For its size, it was reasonable priced although it was still out of my budget. However, that does not mean I have stopped thinking about it or wanting one of these iconic style mirrors. I was unable to find a good history of peacock mirrors but I believe they originated in Indian Palaces. According to Restoration Hardware they are "inspired by the fanned tail feathers of a peacock - known as "the bird with hundred eyes". Whatever their background, I love them for their intricate design and sculptural quality.

Elizabeth Chapin's paintings are a bit out of my comfort zone but there is something about them that draws me in. I think it has to do with the expressions on the faces of those depicted - there is just something penetrating about their gazes. Chapin lives and works in Austin.
