four poster beds

Emily Oster

A couple of weeks ago, I was trolling Craigslist when I came across a wood four poster bed. It had nice clean lines and was pretty inexpensive. I thought about emailing the seller but talked myself out of it as a four poster bed is no small piece of furniture and beds are not very high on my want list of home furnishings. This was a mistake and I have been kicking myself ever since. Four poster beds are one of those classic pieces of furniture that if made well can last not only years but generations. I tried finding the post again but it had been removed - probably sold at an even lower price than listed. Now of course, I am obsessed with finding one. If I had been smart enough to snatch the bed up I would have added curtains with ties like in image #1 - love that look! See below for some lovely four poster beds.

american dream builders episode 9

Emily Oster

This was the last episode before the finale and let me say it was bad. In all fairness to the contestants, they were sort of doomed from the start given the architecture they had to work with. The home was Victorian - that is I am pretty sure its knock off, reproduction 1990's Victorian. Victorian when its original can be hard to work with and 1990's Victorian is just about impossible - bad scale and proportion, weird space planning and all that signature 90s oak (see below - the top two images are the before just in case you couldn't tell)

There were a few positives which of course involved Lukas. I liked his parlor room especially his color selection for the woodwork. I also really appreciated his built ins and mix of furniture styles. That being said the client was a young family and this space is totally not functional for kids.

His kitchen was a big improvement over the original and it was at least family friendly. However, its nothing particularly exciting design wise.

The negatives include just about everything else. Elaine did a horrible red family room, Jay's master bedroom and bathroom was fine but overdone, Nina's nursery was way to cutesy and her dining room was not well space planned. Both Nina and Elaine were sent home leaving Lukas and Jay in the finale. Lukas is clearly my favorite and I will be shocked if he doesn't win. I like Jay as well but he needs a designer to guide him. I think he probably would be a great builder to work with in real life but left to his own devices its just not good. My hope is that the finale will make up for this episode but I really am not sure thats possible. One episode review left so stay tuned!

the official start to year two

Emily Oster

And we are back! Thanks to everyone for their patience as I spent the past week making some updates to THE PLACE HOME. I want to introduce three new pages - THE BEAUTIFUL HOME, THE FUNCTIONAL HOME, and THE HOME EXPERIENCED. These contain the past year's blog content - with corresponding thumbnail images - archived into their appropriate categories. THE BEAUTIFUL HOME is where you can find all the posts related to aesthetics. THE FUNCTIONAL HOME contains all the posts that will provide resourceful information about the home. Finally, THE HOME EXPERIENCED is sort of a catch all of posts that relate to how we live in our homes.

The sidebar got a facelift with a few aesthetic improvements as well as links to recurring series. I plan to continue to make small updates but I hope these changes will make THE PLACE HOME a more useful and inspiring home resource in its second year. Thanks again for following along - enjoy!
