tom scheerer in the bahamas

Emily Oster

This time last year, we were planning our May trip to the Bahamas. It was an amazing vacation and one we frequently talk of doing again. In fact, if it were feasible I would book that trip right now! So when I saw the recent Architectural Digest feature on Tom Scheerer's new personal Bahamas home, I was already predisposed to love the project. Composed of six small pavilions connected by courtyards and outdoor living spaces, the home is simplicity at its best. Stucco covered concrete, hipped roofs and thick walls make the structures into their own sort of monolithic village.

The exterior is perfectly complimented by the interior which includes lots of white, rattan and natural textiles.

This Great Abaco Island home is just the most recent of Scheerer's Bahamas design collection. Past projects include this stunning hilltop home....

This veranda home...

As well as several others - some available for viewing on Scheerer's website and other not yet published.

on craigslist lately

Emily Oster

As my regular readers know, I keep a pretty good pulse on St. Louis Craigslist postings. Sometimes I am looking for specific items but usually I just end up browsing. It has become an inspiring activity for me seeing what cool, old things are being bought and sold in the area around me. Below are a few noteworthy listings.

The above Deacon's Bench has been appraised as being from the 1860s and is listed for $600. It's 6 feet long and is a totally classic piece that could be used in an entryway, hallway or at a dining room table. If my entry hall was wider I would definitely purchase it.

This cane chaise lounge has been posted for months and its so amazing! Ever time I come across it, I think of the above beautiful bedroom designed by Tom Scheerer. You would need a pretty large bedroom to put it at the end of the bed but it also could work well in a living room or on a porch. Its being sold for just $125!

These brass shelves are listed for $150 each and while they are great as is, they would be more incredible retrofitted to be open shelving in a kitchen.

Have a great weekend everyone!

chocolate brown walls

Emily Oster

I am helping a friend with her recently purchased new home and am trying to convince her to paint her basement family room brown. Yes - brown. A deep chocolate brown that is chic, unexpected and timeless. She is having a hard time visualizing the color so I thought I would do this post to help her out. See brown walls can be so good!

Perhaps no other designer creates better spaces with a brown backdrop than Tom Scheerer. He is a complete master - not to mention one of my absolute favorite interior designers.  Brown works well to highlight other colors such as purple and blue while keeping the base color of the room neutral but also impactful. In short, its a classic choice so embrace the brown!
